carbs are not the enemy

carbs are not the enemy

As someone who has tried almost every diet there is, I feel that I can confidently say — carbs are not the enemy. The enemy is instead, our mindset and the thoughts that we allow to consume us.

When I did the keto diet, l strictly avoided carbs and began to think of carbs as evil. So when I (quite quickly) went off of the keto diet, I was still very aware of the amount of carbohydrates I was consuming and thought of the macronutrient as something that pushes me away from my goals. As a woman, this began to negatively affect not only my relationship with food but my hormones and energy levels. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t losing weight and why my energy was so low, I was doing everything right — I was avoiding carbs like I’ve been told to.

When I reintroduced carbs back into my diet I noticed quite a difference in my energy levels almost instantly. I had my energy back, I started to feel like myself again. It took me a while to get my mindset to where I wanted it to be, to stop questioning whether I “deserve” carbohydrates or whether I worked out enough to eat them.

Carbs are our body’s main energy source, and, this may be an unpopular opinion, our body needs them. I may just be speaking from personal experience, but I notice both my mind and body functioning much better when I enjoy carbs in whatever form I desire, whenever I want. And it just so happens that I’ve been able to reach all of my personal goals while doing so. Turns out, carbs really weren’t my enemy.
